A play of lighthearted words that tells the grave truth.
A truthful life spoken by the literary trickster.
Oh Eun’s third poetry collection, From Being to Being, was written in light of the Sinking of MV Sewol, a tragedy that had thrown the nation into inconsolable grief. Since the terrible incident, Korean society has remained conflicted, with the people left on their own to either mourn or dissociate from the collective trauma. In From Being to Being, Oh Eun, who has openly discussed the dark side of the country that is often dubbed “Hell” by its own citizens, compiled the poems to reflect his perspective on the state of Korean society. While his signature humor and wordplay still entertain without fail, his longing to document the feelings of pain, gloom, and loneliness pertaining to the absurdity of society has intensified. The bleak play of words roaming against the somber backdrop marks these poems unmistakably of Oh Eun, the literary trickster who progresses toward the truth of life in his poems as he multiplies yu(existence) out of mu(nothing).
