A record of brave observation to speak of the self.
A poet’s first steps to build a better self.
A poet and a novelist, Lim Sol-A delivers piercing observations in her sturdy voice for her debut poetry collection, Grotesque Weather and Good People. As in her debut novel, which narrates the conflicts and violence among feral youths and the predicament they face in society, this poetry collection also explores the interiority of an individual unable to assimilate or compromise with the corrupt, violent world. The poet’s willingness to textually convey her internal endeavors to resolve contradictions by accepting the world as objectively as possible is captured faithfully in this collection. In the book, “I,” who is often called good, opens the window and throws out the clump of “grotesque weather and good people” inside her. A “good person” who passively repeats the same word again and again, the speaker can only be herself by pushing what is not her outside of herself. In Lim Sol-A’s poetry, “I” becomes her authentic self by refusing to compromise with other people’s expectations.
